What To Expect During Your Kitchen Project…

Kitchen renovations represent one of the most significant home improvement investments you'll make. Understanding the timeline from initial design concepts through to final completion helps you plan effectively, minimise disruption, and set realistic expectations.

Many homeowners underestimate the time required for each stage, leading to frustration and scheduling conflicts with work and family life.

At Wells Construction Ltd, we've completed many kitchen renovation over the years, giving us a good understanding of what each project stage involves.

Our builders in Hertfordshire manage the entire process, coordinating trades and making sure work progresses smoothly. Knowing the typical timeline for kitchen renovations helps you prepare properly and appreciate why rushing certain stages compromises quality.

Kitchen Design & Planning Phase

The kitchen design consultation typically takes one to two weeks, depending on how quickly you make decisions. During this stage, you'll meet with designers to discuss layout options, material selections, appliance choices, and budget considerations. Taking time at this stage prevents costly changes later when work has already begun.

Detailed measurements and technical drawings follow the initial consultation. Accurate measurements prove crucial for fitted kitchens where millimetre precision determines whether units fit correctly.

Professional surveys identify potential issues, structural constraints, or building regulation requirements that might affect the design. Planning applications or building control approval may be necessary, particularly if you're removing walls, extending the property, or making significant structural changes.

These applications typically take eight to twelve weeks for approval, though permitted development rights sometimes allow work without formal planning permission. Gas and electrical work always requires building regulation notification.

Ordering Materials & Lead Times

Custom kitchen units usually require six to twelve weeks for manufacture once the order is placed. Bespoke cabinetry takes longer than standard ranges, but the wait delivers kitchens tailored precisely to your space and preferences. Ordering early in the process means units arrive when the installation team is ready to fit them.

Worktop materials vary significantly in lead times. Laminate worktops might be available within days, but engineered stone, granite, or solid timber surfaces often need four to six weeks.

Template visits only happen once base units are installed, adding further time before worktop fitting can occur.

Appliances typically arrive within two to four weeks, though specific models or colours may take longer. Coordinating appliance delivery with the installation schedule prevents items sitting in boxes for weeks or arriving after fitters need them.

Supply Chain Considerations

Material availability can extend timelines unexpectedly. Popular tile ranges, specific tap finishes or trending paint colours sometimes face stock shortages. Building flexibility into your timeline accommodates these potential delays without derailing the entire project.

Strip Out & Preparation Work

Removing the existing kitchen usually takes one to two days for average-sized rooms. This stage involves disconnecting appliances, removing units, worktops and wall tiles, then disposing of everything responsibly. The space often looks worse before it improves, but thorough strip-out provides a clean canvas for the new kitchen.

First fix work follows strip-out and includes repositioning plumbing, installing new electrical circuits, moving radiators, and making any structural alterations. This stage typically requires three to five days, depending on complexity. Moving waste pipes or relocating the boiler adds considerable time and cost to projects.

Plastering and floor preparation come next, taking two to three days plus drying time. Walls need to be smooth and level for units to sit properly and tiles to fix correctly. Floor levelling prevents wonky base units and makes sure appliances sit level. Rushing this stage causes problems throughout the remaining installation.

Kitchen Installation Phase

Base unit installation begins once walls and floors are ready, typically taking two to three days for average kitchens. Fitters work methodically, making sure each unit sits level and is securely fixed. Wall units follow, with careful attention to height consistency and secure fixing to support the weight of crockery and provisions.

Worktop templating happens after base units are installed, with fabricators creating precise patterns of your layout. Stone or engineered worktops then require one to two weeks for cutting and polishing before fitting takes place. Installation day involves careful positioning, cutting for sinks and hobs, and creating perfectly sealed joints.

Appliance installation, tiling and decoration follow worktop fitting. Connecting integrated appliances takes one to two days, whilst tiling might require two to three days depending on area and pattern complexity. Final painting and decorating adds another two to three days, transforming the space from building site to finished kitchen.

Second Fix & Final Touches

Electrical second fix involves installing sockets, light fittings, and connecting appliances to circuits. Qualified electricians complete this work, making sure everything meets current regulations and functions safely. Plumbers fit taps, connect waste pipes, and commission appliances like dishwashers and washing machines.

Finishing touches include fitting handles, touching up paintwork, installing plinths, and adding cornice or pelmet details. This stage typically takes one to two days but makes an enormous difference to the finished appearance.

Quality finishing separates adequate kitchens from exceptional ones!

Final snagging involves checking every detail, addressing any minor issues, and making sure you're completely satisfied. Professional builders return to rectify any problems identified during this inspection, typically within a few days of completion.

Realistic Overall Timeframes

Simple kitchen replacements with minimal structural work usually take four to six weeks from starting work to completion. This assumes materials arrive on schedule and no unexpected issues emerge during strip-out or installation.

Mid-range renovations involving some structural changes, or reconfiguring layouts typically require six to eight weeks. Additional complexity from removing walls, installing steel beams, or significant plumbing alterations extends timelines proportionally.

Extensive kitchen renovations incorporating structural work, planning applications or complete room reconfiguration often take three to four months. These projects might involve building extensions, creating open-plan layouts, or undertaking significant structural alterations that require careful engineering and building control approval.
