At Wells Construction Ltd, we recently carried out a kitchen renovation for a listed home in Stebbing, Essex. This project involved a full refurbishment of the kitchen and dining room areas, with structural alterations and traditional restoration work.
The client wanted to modernise the space while keeping the character of the original building. As the property is listed, every part of the renovation was completed with care to preserve its historic value.
We opened up the kitchen and dining room into a single flowing space, fitted a new kitchen, and carried out multiple upgrades throughout - all finished to a high standard.
To create a more open-plan layout, we removed the dividing wall between the kitchen and dining areas. A large oak beam was installed to support the opening and maintain the structural integrity of the building. This beam really complemented the style of the building and added to the character of the newly opened space.
We fitted a new underfloor heating system across the renovated area. This keeps the room warm without the need for visible radiators, creating a cleaner and more spacious layout.
The heating is energy-efficient and evenly distributed, making it ideal for modern living in traditional homes. It also pairs well with the new flooring selected by the client.
The kitchen was fully replaced with modern units and worktops. We completed the full installation, including plumbing, electrical work and appliance setup.
We also fitted new external doors and windows, improving energy performance and visual appeal. These were chosen to suit the style of the building, with careful attention to detail on finishes and fittings.
As part of the wider renovation, we also fitted a new cloakroom. This included new fittings, plumbing and wall finishes, all tied into the overall design of the renovation.
Once the structural and installation work was complete, we carried out a full interior decoration throughout the space. Walls, ceilings and trims were painted to a clean, high standard - finishing off the project ready for use.
Outside, we carried out restoration work on the chimney stack. The original stack had begun to fail, so we dismantled and rebuilt it using reclaimed bricks and traditional lime mortar.
Using lime mortar helps the building breathe, which is essential for older listed properties. The reclaimed bricks kept the appearance consistent with the original architecture.
This work helps preserve the structure long-term and meets all listed building requirements.
This renovation project in Stebbing was all about balance - bringing the home up to modern standards without losing its historic charm.
Our team handled every part of the work, from structural changes to detailed finishes. The result is a warm, functional space that respects the character of the property, with modern comfort and quality throughout.
